Show Abstract
We demonstrate a metamaterial device whose far-infrared resonance frequency can be dynamically tuned. Dynamic tuning should alleviate many bandwidth-related roadblocks to metamaterial application by granting a wide matrix of selectable electromagnetic properties. This tuning effect is achieved via a hybrid-metamaterial architecture; intertwining split ring resonator metamaterial elements with vanadium dioxide (VO2)-a material whose optical properties can be strongly and quickly changed via external stimulus. This hybrid structure concept opens a fresh dimension in both exploring and exploiting the intriguing electromagnetic behavior of metamaterials.

Show Abstract
The authors describe a rational approach to an important step in video microscopy particle tracking called noise discrimination. Using the morphology of the brightness profiles produced by the particles, false and dubious detections are eliminated from the valid tracking data. This selection process is found to affect the spatial resolution ε and the depth zb of the tracking. Accordingly, it is shown that a stringent selection of the particles closest to the focal plane improves the spatial resolution (i.e., decreases ε) but also diminishes zb. The authors further demonstrate that the statistical accuracy is worsened by lower zb. Noise discrimination thus has a critical influence on the overall performance of the particle tracking technique.

Show Abstract
We present x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy measurements taken on diindenoperylene (DIP) thin films of different thicknesses deposited on polycrystalline gold. Our investigations show that DIP films present flat lying molecules in the first layer, while the angle between the molecular axis and the surface increases with thickness. By using XPS, we find evidence for Stranski–Krastanov growth mode.
